Aerodrome Finance is a decentralized exchange and liquidity marketplace built for the Base ecosystem. It allows users to swap cryptocurrencies directly through smart contracts while enabling liquidity providers to deposit token pairs into pools that support trading. The protocol is designed to serve as a central venue for directing and managing liquidity across Base.
Aerodrome uses an automated market maker model rather than a traditional order book. Its pools accommodate different types of assets, including stable pools for similarly priced tokens and volatile pools for assets whose prices can move more significantly. Traders pay fees when completing swaps, while liquidity providers can earn fees and AERO incentives for supplying assets to selected pools.
AERO is the protocol’s liquid utility and incentive token. It is primarily distributed to liquidity providers as a reward for supporting designated pools. Holders can lock AERO to receive veAERO, represented as a transferable NFT, which gives them voting power over how future AERO emissions are distributed. veAERO voters can also receive trading fees and incentives associated with the pools they support.
This voting system creates a marketplace in which projects can encourage veAERO holders to direct rewards toward pools containing their tokens. Greater rewards can attract more liquidity, which may improve trading conditions and increase activity within those pools. AERO therefore supports Aerodrome’s liquidity incentives, while veAERO controls governance, emission allocation and access to protocol-generated rewards.
