Installed Building Products traces its roots back to 1977, when it began as a small insulation installer under the name Edwards Insulation. Over time, the company expanded beyond a niche local contractor by adding new services, opening branch locations, and engaging in acquisitions to build a national platform. Its growth strategy has emphasized combining organic expansion with strategic acquisitions of regional insulation and building-product installers, enabling it to scale across geographies in the U.S.

In operations, IBP runs three core segments: Installation, Distribution, and Manufacturing. In its Installation segment, it handles the end-to-end deployment of insulation and complementary building products (such as waterproofing, fire-stopping, gutters, garage doors, mirrors, etc.) for residential (single-family and multi-family) and commercial buildings. The Distribution arm sources, manages, and supplies the materials needed across job sites, intermediating between national manufacturers and branch operations. The Manufacturing operations allow IBP to produce certain components, helping control supply, quality, and margins.

Positioned in the building-products and installation services space, IBP aims to be the leading national provider of insulation and related installation services in the U.S. Its branch-based model (with more than 200 branches nationwide) gives it local reach while maintaining scale advantages. The company often pursues acquisitions of regional installers to accelerate growth, expand its footprint, and diversify its regional exposure. Its ability to integrate distribution and manufacturing under the same umbrella differentiates it from pure installers—giving it potential cost, control, and margin advantages. Over time, IBP’s positioning is as a vertically integrated, scalable installer of insulation and complementary building products, capitalizing on residential and commercial construction cycles and regional consolidation opportunities.
