Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo, commonly known as Sabesp, is Brazil’s largest water and sewage services provider and one of the largest in Latin America. Headquartered in São Paulo, the company serves approximately 375 municipalities across the state, supplying clean water to over 28 million people and providing sewage collection and treatment services to more than 25 million residents. Sabesp plays a vital role in public health and environmental sustainability by managing the full cycle of water—from sourcing and treatment to distribution and wastewater management.

Established in 1973, Sabesp was formed through the consolidation of several regional sanitation entities as part of Brazil's National Sanitation Plan (PLANASA). This initiative aimed to standardize and expand water and sewage services across the state. Over time, Sabesp has grown into a mixed-capital company, with the São Paulo state government retaining a majority stake and the remaining shares publicly traded on the São Paulo and New York stock exchanges.

Sabesp has been at the forefront of innovative projects to enhance water sustainability. Notably, it partnered in the Aquapolo project, the largest industrial water reuse initiative in South America, supplying treated wastewater to the petrochemical complex in the Greater ABC region. The company also manages the Cantareira System, one of the world's largest water supply systems, which is crucial for the São Paulo metropolitan area's water needs.

Despite its achievements, Sabesp has faced challenges, including infrastructure issues leading to significant water losses through leaks and a major water crisis in São Paulo during the mid-2010s. In response, the company has implemented measures such as pressure management and pipeline upgrades to reduce losses and improve service reliability. Through ongoing investments and modernization efforts, Sabesp continues to strive toward ensuring sustainable water and sanitation services for the population it serves.
