Talos Energy Inc. is a U.S.-based independent oil & gas company headquartered in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 2012 (with initial backing from Apollo Global Management and Riverstone Holdings) and has grown through mergers and acquisitions, including the 2018 merger with Stone Energy.
The core of Talos’s business is offshore exploration, development, and production of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids in the Gulf of Mexico (U.S.) and offshore Mexico. It holds assets in both deepwater and shallow water plays, operates in subsea fields, and maintains a diverse portfolio of leases, prospects, and seismic data across key offshore basins.
Talos has augmented its portfolio through strategic acquisitions and discoveries. For example, it acquired QuarterNorth Energy, adding several deepwater operating assets and lowering its base decline rate. It has made exploration successes such as the Lime Rock and Venice discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico. Talos also plays a role in the notable Zama oil discovery off Mexico’s Gulf coast (in Block 7 of the Sureste Basin), where it was initially the operator and continues to have a stake (though operational control and ownership arrangements with PEMEX and other partners are complex and contested).
