UFP Industries was founded in 1955 under the name Universal Forest Products to supply lumber to the manufactured housing industry. Over the decades, it grew through internal expansion and numerous acquisitions, broadening its product mix, geographic reach, and customer base. In 2020, the company formally rebranded to UFP Industries to better reflect its diversified operations across multiple markets, and reorganized away from geographic divisions into market-based segments.
Today, UFP operates through three primary segments: UFP Construction, UFP Retail Solutions, and UFP Packaging (often also referenced as Industrial).
UFP Construction supplies engineered wood components, structural panels, trusses, treated lumber, and related building systems to homebuilders, commercial builders, modular and factory-built housing, and other construction projects.
UFP Retail Solutions markets wood and wood-alternative building products to retailers (big box chains, independent dealers, co-ops), offering design, logistics, branding, and inventory support services.
UFP Packaging supplies wooden pallets, crates, custom wood packaging, OEM components, and protective shipping solutions across industries.
UFP aims to be a vertically integrated, market-oriented supplier of wood and wood-alternative products—competing not simply on commodity pricing but on product breadth, logistics, design support, and close alignment with customers. Its branch network—over 200+ locations—and its scale as a major buyer of softwood lumber give it sourcing advantages and delivery flexibility. Because its segments address multiple end markets (construction, retail distribution, industrial packaging), UFP is better able to smooth the effects of cyclical downturns in any one sector.
